Alright, real talk. Can you name five famous composers? I couldn't, either. And yet, we can all hum their tunes. They're the most famous anonymous people in the world.
What really got me was learning to spot the function of the music. Is it "underscoring" the emotion? Is it "mickey-mousing" the action? Is it providing ironic counterpoint? Once you know what to listen for, you can't un-hear it.
Not trying to spam links, but if you want to skip my rambling and go straight to the good stuff, this is the index: Cinema Sound Archive. Maybe I'm just stating the obvious, but it feels like we talk about this part of filmmaking way too little.
